Philanthropy, a Thinking Man's Gift to the World
If you're reading this book as the member of a family with wealth, you're probably one of the lucky ones who've won Warren Buffett's ovarian lottery. Are you born into a family with wealth and have access to more opportunities and experiences than most? Have you been born into a family on which the custody of great fortunes has been bestowed? If you're aware of the joy of receiving, you'll equally be aware that the joy of giving and giving back to others has a cascading effect. The one in each generation who places the highest value on philanthropy will dedicate their time, attention, and intention to the family's philanthropic cause.
The family member with the biggest drive to get an answer to the question of how the family can do good with its money is most likely the one who will give birth to a philanthropic cause or vision for the family. And, of course, every person will look at the world and perceive voids in humanity and society that resonate with their highest priorities and unique hierarchy of values. The vision for your family's philanthropic cause will be for the long haul. The vision is the starting point for the creation of the cause and is in essence the service offering to see people emerging from their past and living their potential.
Philanthropy is a nonprofit endeavor and needs leadership and people to execute tasks and functions. If you're the one who wants to get the family's philanthropy going, know that it will be your responsibility to drive and manage it. Here are some important points to consider:
Surround yourself with the kind of people who will assist you in fulfilling your intention and vision.
Do enough research and speak to other men and women who have experience inventing and bringing a philanthropic cause to life.
Have certainty of your big why. The bigger your why, the more clearly your how will appear.
Have realistic expectations and time lines. If you have unrealistic expectations and you expect support without challenge and pleasure without pain, you will create a nightmare instead of an inspiring vision and mission.
Define a clear vision and mission for the philanthropic cause and legacy.
Choose a cause that inspires you and ignites a fire in you. If you don't love what you're doing, you'll give up.
Run it like a business with the right people in place, to whom you can delegate responsibility. Be an inspiring leader.
Learn to say no. You will be bombarded with requests for financial support. Have clarity and certainty in your mind about the reason for your charitable aid or donations. Why do you wish to increase the well‐being of humankind?
Stick to your plan and direction and be authentic to your wish for making a difference to mankind.
Be grateful that you have excess of financial means that give you the freedom and opportunity to be a blessing for other less‐fortunate fellow beings.
Be a wise custodian of the finances bestowed to your care.
